This Tuesday

So I decided to have a lazy weekend and a catch up Monday. I needed to finish some siggy blocks so I could mail off some bee blocks. I also decided to jump into my Sew Bee Joyful block, to get it out of the way. We had a 2-3 month window since we got the assignment so late but I don't like having things sitting around so I just went for it. We were mailed a selection of fabrics and asked to use flying geese or triangle in some way. This is what I came up with.
Sew Bee Joyful Block - Feb. 2012
I felt challenged by the fabric selection, a beach print and coordinating tone on tones. She said we could add from our stash but I took it as a challenge and only added 2 strips of solid brown on the edge, everything else was from the stash she sent. I like the block, I'm not in love with the block, but I'm happy with what I was able to do with such a unique fabric set. I also had finished one of my Hoop Up Swap pieces and needed to make a little somethin' somethin' to give my partner. I made this little pouch.
Hoop Up Partner Present
I used some leftover Henna Garden and an antique button, and lined it with grey quilters linen.

I also filled it with some goodies but I'm not going to spoil that surprise! Right now my next thing will be working on my 3x6 bee blocks. This is the design in my colors, and finally I have all the solids I need to do the rest of my hive. We are working in all solids and I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with!

I also worked on a charity quilt this weekend but the kit I had had a mistake in the fabrics and so I'm going to have to play with it to make it work. I'll show pics of that one next time. Lastly, I am planning a quilt for my favorite cousin Tonya. She has decided on a black and white theme and wants silhouetted cats and some wonky stars. Here are the fabrics she has bought:

I excited to start playing with layouts, and will keep you posted on the progress! Linking up to:

Lots of Finishes Friday

So I didn't get as much sewing done this weekend as I normally do because I wen to Mardi Gras! I have been several times but it was my roommates first time and we had a good time. Me (left), Heidi (right)
Heidi and I - Mardi Gras 2012
We had a total of about 16 hours driving and so I was able to get a lot of hand work done. I finished my Feb. Beejeebers block! Based on the theme of family board games, I chose Cranium.
Beejeebers Feb block
I also finished up one of my pieces for my Hoop Up Swap. This one is for Maripen, based on a woodlands creatures theme.
Hoop Up Swap - Maripen's Block
I also made some good progress on Tropical Soup's Hoop Up piece, based on the poem the Owl and the Pussycat.
Hoop Up Swap -tropical soup, in progress
I am still working on my owls and was able to finish one all but the eyes, which the colors I had accidentally left at home.
Owl embroidery in progress
Whew. Lots of embroidery. I also had some hexagons but they were all from the same fabric so I will need to make up some more so that I can actually work on them. I realized that I needed a good embroidery bag on this trip, with lots of pockets! So as I had plenty of time, I thought a lot and decided I wanted to use solids and do a rainbow sort of thing. This is what I came up with:
I used some of my quilter's linen that I bought last week and just some kona solids. I was playing with the scraps and I liked the way they were looking so I told myself that I needed to incorporate them into the piece somehow.
This is what I came up with. I am still debating on whether to add some hand stitching, I have this beautiful rainbow variegated pearl cotton I got from the Houston International Quilt Festival and I might just use some..
Embroidery Pouch - Back
I just sewed one line through the center of each little strip and I LOVE the way it looks. I also sewed a line vertically down the middle the make this pocket into two pockets. I lined the pouch in a bright pink and put two pockets in yellow on the inside.
Embroidery Pouch - Inside
I'm thinking of doing this again and making it into a tutorial. We will see. Off to figure out what to do next! Linking up to: Finish it Up Friday, Can I get a Whoop Whoop, and

W.I.P. Wednesday

I have gotten a good chunk of stuff done this weekend and week so far!

I finished my Chain Link top!!! I am trying to decide on how I want to quilt it. I think simple vertical/horizontal lines will do the trick. I want to keep the symmetrical vibe in tact.

Of course Marta sat in the middle of it.

Because she was so insistent I had her model it.

Very happy with the way it turned out! I think this one will go to my roommate Heidi.

I also made some good progress on Bee blocks.

Beejeebers:
This month the challenge is a 16'' block with the theme of a family board game. I chose Cranium. I have the base of the block together, I just need to do the name and details in embroidery. I think it looks pretty similar!

Beejeebers Feb. Block in Progress

I also finished my We Bee Modern Too block from the Modern Blocks Book. I got to finish this on my new Sewing Table!! It came together very easily. I might have to do some of these for myself! I think they would make adorable pillows!

We Bee Modern Too Feb. Block

I also started the embroidery on Maripen's Hoop Up Swap piece. Her inspiration was Woodland Creatures.

Beginning of Maripen's Hoop Up Block

I have all the materials and the hoop and everything for TropicalSoup's, which is based on the poem about the Owl and the Pussycat. I had never heard of it but there's some cute stuff out there. I think I will use this as the basis of my design:

Owl and Pussycat at sea

I also jumped on Danny's Zippered Pouch Tutorial. I had made a Dumpling pouch a couple of weeks back for my make up but it didn't hold much. So I decided to enlarge Danny's pattern and make one for myself as my new makeup bag.

I had found this fabric at a LQS and loved the vintage look of it!

After I had made that one, my boyfriend saw it and was like man, I could use a toiletry bag.
So I told him that if he would bite the bullet and go to Jo-Ann's with me and pick out his own fabric, I would make him one as well. Here is what he came up with.

Mike's Toiletry Bag

He wanted it to remind him of the crazy linings of men's suits and it is very loud and I think it works. Plus... I got to keep the leftovers. :)

I've done lots this week but will be going to Mardi Gras this weekend through the middle of next week so won't get much done till next weekend. I have a massive load of packages of bee blocks and Fugly Fabric packages that I will be sending out tomorrow.

Thanks for visiting!

My Birthday Present!

So lots to share today from the past couple of days! First of all today is my birthday and I got the most magnificent birthday present from my boyfriend. I work nights so when I came home last night at 3 am he tricked me into going into my sewing room to look for something that he thought had fallen out of his pocket by the ironing board.

When I got to the door there was a rose in the latch and when I opened the door, my machine was covered with a quilt. A couple of months back I had asked for a sewing table/platform so that I could FMQ better and since I have a Bernina, the arm is very narrow and it would just be awesome to have. Ask and you shall receive.

This is what I uncovered.

Birthday Present from Mike

He had given me 22 roses the day before and said I would have to wait for the other two. One was in the door, the other on my new table!

Here's the close up's of the post it's:

Birthday Post it's Part 1

Birthday Post it's Part 2

Birthday Post it's Part 3

Earlier that night I had ordered Chinese food, which I hate but it was that or almost rancid leftovers, and the fortune cookie message was this:

My Valentine's Day Fortune Cookie

He said it almost ruined the surprise. I was wondering why he never acknowledged that text!

Anyways, I am super excited to try it out. In fact I had to sit down and finish a block on it before I went to bed! I'm so lucky to have such a great guy. I think I might turn one of his pics into a Ryan Gosling one..

"Hey baby, if you're good, I'll surprise you with a sewing table for your birthday."

This Friday

So I am almost done with the Chain Link quilt top. I have finished the center of it and am in the process of putting borders on.

Finished Chain Link Center

This is what I decided on for the border. I wanted to keep it simple to go along with the style of the quilt.

Chain Link Border in Progress

It will finish about a twin size I think. I should be able to finish this top tomorrow and possibly even quilt it as well... Hmmm.

But I also have another finish I'm pretty happy about!
MY NAME GAME SWAP MINI!

It should arrive in El Paso to it's owner today so I can show you what it looks like finally!!

My partner is Irene from Hilachas. Hilachas is Spanish for the loose threads all over the floor in your sewing room. I wish we had an English word for those!

Name Game Swap

To ties in the loose threads I cut up pieces of red pearl cotton and FMQ'ed them down into the center of the dresdens to give texture and truly tie the meaning of her name into the piece.

Name Game Swap Close Up

I hand quilted the echo from the dresden plate.

Here's the whole thing:

I'm very happy with how it turned out, I was a little worried at first because her style was much more traditional than mine but I think I was able to combine both our styles with a nice result!

My Weekly Works in Progress

I have made major progress on my Chain Link. I know, I've been working on this one forever! I am determined to finish the top for my guild meeting on Monday and I'm in the home stretch!

I finished all of my blocks and trimmed them. This is a step I used to step but after I tried it a couple of quilts ago, I'll never go back! The piecing is so easy if you trim your blocks!!

Before Trim:
Chain Link Blocks Finished

After Trim:

Plus, I just love the way the trimming look in the trash can. Weird, I know.

And of course, my helper, Marta. She literally laid on top of my feet when I was trimming.

I also finished my Name Game Swap Mini!!! Sooooo happy with it. I mailed it today, it should get there on Friday, so next week I should be able to show you the whole thing, but until then, here's a peek of the quilting I did on it.

I also made some really good progress on my bee blocks. I chose a block for my 3x6 Solids group and did a test block in my colors:
2012 3x6 Solids Bee Block

I also finished my Stash Bee Block for Samantha, a pineapple block. Now I know I don't like to do pineapple blocks. :)
Stash Bee Feb. 2012 Blocks

I told myself that if I finished my Chain Link and my Name Game, I can start working on my Flying Geese again, so I should be able to pick that up again by next week!
Layout 5

Whew. After those I don't have anything but hand quilting to finish! Looks like I need to start scheming my next project...

Expect I always have Farmer's Wife blocks to do. Always.
